Alexandre Liberato Gallery is pleased to announce the pop-up show μελαγχολία (melancholy in ancient Greek) that brings together fine art print limited editions by HANSLAND and Alexandre Liberato.

HANSLAND is presenting the photo book “CRETE by Hansland'' accompanied by a series of fine art prints reproducing faithfully the original black and white polaroids taken in Crete, as well as a selection of other works that best crystallize his artistic practice. Over the past ten years he has developed a certain look that some people might describe as "fallen out of time" or "melancholic." The lack of color is probably the main reason, but it is also due to the absence of people, and a preference for old or ancient subjects. Certainly, his photographs of Crete are the opposite to Greece’s popular postcard and most tourist shots.

Liberato is showing two of his fine art print limited editions: SER, created digitally in San Sebastian in 2020, and SENSIBILITY, a faithful reproduction of selected parts of ODE TO SENSIBILITY, an artwork on cotton fabric from 2021. Liberato relates to melancholy as something he describes as “positively negative”, finding in the inability to achieve perfection, a pure state of inner peace, transmitted by the geometric structures and materiality, created both physically and digitally.

HANSLAND is Markus Hans Kleierl (*26.10.1972 in Amberg, Bavaria) combining his pictures with songs. Inspired by Patti Smith’s analog photo work, Hans has been taking black and white photographs since 2013 with original Polaroid "Land" cameras from the late 1960s and early 1970s, including the Polaroid "Land350" camera with Fuji "FP-3000b" peel-apart packfilm, when still available. Being a very sonic person, he names the shots after songs because he thinks that the pictures are similar to certain songs in terms of the mood, the feeling or even the theme. The fine art prints reproduce faithfully the original instant Polaroids and are produced with great loyalty at Das Foto Image Factory, Berlin. The originals are scanned professionally, then printed in different sizes and with almost no post-processing on Hahnemühle Silk Baryta and/or Canon Baryta Photographic II paper. In the last ten years, HANSLAND has shown his work in several exhibitions in Berlin and Athens. He has self-published a handful of books such as "CRETE by Hansland", "Loom Of The Land" containing pictures combined exclusively with songs by Nick Cave, and most recently "dECADE", a recap of his work from 2013 to 2022.

Alexandre Liberato (*1981, Lisbon) is a Portuguese visual artist based in Berlin. He holds a BA (Hons) in Architecture from the Technical University of Lisbon (2005) and attended CREART Labs in Barcelona (2017). His work has been exhibited internationally in Berlin at KINDL - Center for Contemporary Art, Gallery Heike Arndt DK, Hošek Contemporary, 48 Stunden Neukölln Festival, and Projektraum 145; in Barcelona at Espacio 88; as well as at the Thessaloniki Queer Art Online Festival. In 2019, KONVENT.ZERO selected Liberato for its artist-in-residence program in Barcelona. Liberato’s project focuses on geometry and the body, creating an abstract inclusive space to exist, to contemplate the sublime: a sensibility that touches everyone equally, transforming them from the inside. Through his work, he seeks a conscious Emancipation, not limited to LGBTQ+ people, but rather an Emancipation of masculinity from toxic outdated paradigms.
