alexandre liberato

Alexandre Liberato, born in 1981 in Lisbon, Portugal, is a Berlin-based visual artist and architect whose work bridges multiple disciplines, including painting, textile art, sculpture, and architecture. He earned his BA (Hons) in Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture at the Technical University of Lisbon in 2005 and has since expanded his creative practice through specialized programs such as CREART Artistic Research Labs and a residency at Konvent.Zero in Barcelona. Liberato's art delves into themes of masculinity, memory, vulnerability, and transformation, exploring the nuanced relationship between materiality and meaning.

With a cross-disciplinary background, Liberato’s architectural training shapes his approach to space, structure, and materiality, evident in his visual art practice. His works have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Europe, including at the KINDL - Center for Contemporary Art, Hošek Contemporary, 48 Stunden Neukölln, Studio Baustelle, Projektraum 145, and his own STUDIO/GALLERY in Berlin. Additionally, his work has been showcased at the Thessaloniki Queer Art Festival, reflecting a thoughtful synthesis of conceptual exploration and meticulous craftsmanship.

statment

My work emerges from an exploration of vulnerability, transformation, and the tension between presence and absence. Through an interdisciplinary approach—encompassing painting, textile art, and sculpture—I engage in both introspection and a dialogue with the external world. I am particularly drawn to materials like natural fabrics and sewing threads, which I manipulate to reveal the hidden narratives embedded within them. Each thread and layer of paint becomes a gesture of care, an act of mending and connection, while also reflecting on time, fragility, and endurance. Every stitch serves as both a mark of thought and a trace of emotional and physical labor, questioning how we experience and communicate memory, identity, and masculinity.

My background in architecture profoundly shapes the way I engage with space, structure, and the materiality of my work. Central to my practice is the creation of abstract, inclusive spaces that explore the complexities of masculinity, the power of conscious vulnerability, and the potential for transformation, ultimately inviting contemplation of the sublime.
